Berlin’s Buchkunst Gallery presents photographs by Thomas Hoepker: the exhibition, titled ‘My Way’, is on show from September 4 to November 20, 2022.
Within the context of this year’s BerlinPhotoWeek, visitors are invited to attend the opening reception of the exhibition ‘My Way’ with works by Thomas Hoepker – set to take place on September 3, 2022, from 6 to 10 p.m. The showcase, which is on view until November 20, 2022, also marks the 75th anniversary of the legendary Magnum Photos agency.

Thomas Hoepker has been a full member of Magnum Photos since 1989, and served as the agency’s president from 2003 to 2007. His humanist reportages have shaped our understanding of fine-art auteur photography, and have become part of the medium’s history in their own right. Hoepker is represented in the world’s leading collections and museums; he has also been honoured with the Leica Hall of Fame Award in recognition of this remarkable life’s work.

‘My Way’ is a homage to America and, in particular, New York – the German photographer’s adopted home city. Large-scale colour prints of the Big Apple in the 1980s are juxtaposed with excerpts from Hoepker’s first road trip across the USA in 1963. In this extensive photo reportage for Kristall magazine, the exceptional quality of Hoepker’s work was already evident.

With a keen eye, the young photographer captured everyday scenes in the streets, in casinos and bars, in backyards and poor neighbourhoods. The result was an intense, meticulously observed portrait of a country marked by racial discrimination, religious conservatism and mass consumerism, whose profound effect on viewers remains undiminished to this day.
