The Magic Behind the Scenes

Equipped with their Leica cameras, Lisa Kutzelnig and Alberto Venzago were up close and personal, revealing unusual glimpses of the complex workings that go on behind the scenes of the Salzburg Festival – before the curtain even rises.
“An honest picture is more important than a beautiful picture,” is the way the Swiss photographer Alberto Venzago summarizes his philosophy. Together with the young photographer, Lisa Kutzelning, he spent three weeks exploring behind the scenes at the Salzburg Festival: make-up and costumes, dye works, laundry, sewing, shoe-making, an office for calculating the purchase of materials, a department where seamstresses and tailors manufacture the costumes that the artists will be wearing on stage. Equipped with their Leica cameras, the two photographers were up close and personal, revealing unusual glimpses of the complex workings that go on behind the scenes of the Salzburg Festival – before the curtain even rises.

The official opening of the photography exhibition at the Großen Festspielhaus is on July 18, 2015, at 11am. During the Salzburg Festival it will open up one hour before each of the performances.
