The displayed images are excerpts from the Berliner Illustrirte Zeitung (BIZ), an illustrated weekly released by Ullstein Publishers from 1894 to 1945. The market-leading magazine, which at its height reached a circulation of almost 2 million copies, serves as a representative for the birth of a new medium: illustrated publications whose popularity was increasingly based on visual content – and whose photographs shaped public perception and fulfilled the visual cravings of their readers.
The Invention of Press Photography takes the viewer back to a time of analogue photography: with 340 original prints by renowned photographers such as Georg and Otto Haeckel, Martin Munkacsi, Felix H. Man, Erich Salomon, Yva, Max Ehlert and Rosemarie Clausen, the exhibition not only gives insight into the history of press photography, but also illustrates the spirit of several different eras. The presentation is complemented by selected editions of the BIZ magazine, enabling viewers to also see the displayed photographs in the context of their original publication.
