Following months of closure due to Covid-19, Fotografiska New York once again opens its doors to the public. Among the displayed showcases is Martin Schoeller’s series ‘Death Row Exonerees’ (August 28 to January 10, 2021). The exhibition comprises ten animated, digital portraits of individuals who were wrongfully sentenced to death, and subsequently exonerated. To create the project, Schoeller collaborated with ‘Witness To Innocence’, a non-profit organisation working to abolish the death penalty in the United States.
Also on display is the exhibition ‘Between These Folded Walls, Utopia’ by artist duo Cooper & Gorfer (August 28 to February 28, 2021). In this series of richly imagined portraits, Sarah Cooper and Nina Gorfer explore the idea of utopia in the age of a new diaspora: young women who have been forced to uproot their lives are photographed like goddesses in lustrous, surrealist-inspired sets.
