For the past three decades, German photographer Frank Gaudlitz has repeatedly travelled to Russia to capture the realities of life in the world’s largest country. From 1992 to 2000, he documented the profound social changes and dramatic upheavals that followed the end of the Soviet Union. The result is a consistent and comprehensive exploration of Russian society during a new era.

In addition to visiting cities in the Western part of the Russian Federation, Gaudlitz also explored the Central-Asian regions of Lake Baikal, along with the Taymyr Peninsula and the Kemerovo coal reserves. His extensive collection of images details how the violent battles for resource-distribution – which originally promised to bring reform, rights and liberties – have resulted in disempowerment and economic depression for the majority of Russia’s population.

The exhibition is accompanied by a photo book of the same title; the showcase will subsequently move to the Michael Horbach Foundation in Cologne and the Goethe Institute in St. Petersburg.
