“The previous day had yielded good light; however, on this particular Tuesday morning in Istanbul things weren’t looking very promising. Inspired by the great Alex Webb, I had become obsessed with contrasting light and shadow. The flat light demotivated me and it was a real effort to leave my hotel in the early hours of the morning. Stumbling across a café in the back streets of Balat, I believed my fortunes might have changed. It's not every day a chained up, imitation tiger presents itself! Delighted by its kitsch appearance, I waited for an interaction. In the distance I noticed a potential character strolling towards my frame. On entering my viewfinder I was relieved to see him look back in curiosity. This is the moment I captured.”
