Riverland

December 25, 2025

Through to January 10, 2026, the Box Gallery in Brussels presents images from Marjolein Martinot’s poetic black and white series.
During a time of deep turmoil in her personal life, Marjolein Martinot – a Dutch photographer and mother of six, who is based in France – found herself feeling adrift and trying to piece together a new sense of self. Every evening, she sought solace in nature, walking to a nearby river in the South of France with her camera in hand. She captured the quiet beauty of the natural world in the golden light of dusk, and formed connections with the people and animals she encountered – horses galloping in the fading glow of the day, children jumping, splashing, climbing and swinging from trees.

What began as a ritual of aimless wandering soon became a form of visual journaling – a quiet meditation on healing and transformation. The water, ever-flowing and unpredictable, mirrored Martinot’s own emotional state. Her photographs transcend autobiography, offering a universal reflection on resilience, connection, and the subtle beauty of the everyday.

The Box Gallery now presents a selection of images from this sensitive and poetic series; Riverland is also available as a book, released by Stanley/Barker.
