The exhibition ‘East to East’ with photographs by Klavdij Sluban is on view at Berlin’s Buchkunst Gallery until February 18, 2023.
The Buchkunst Gallery in Berlin currently presents ‘Klavdij Sluban – East to East’, continuing until February 18, 2023.

Literature as well as Sluban’s own extensive travels form the basis for his poetic black-and-white images. From his adopted home city of Paris, the photographer has undertaken journeys to the Balkans, and has followed the Trans-Siberian Route all the way to China and Japan.

Sluban has a particular gift for transferring the power of a literary novel, and its impact on the reader’s visual imagination, to his way of seeing and the medium of photography. The result are extraordinary images that seem both magical and entirely timeless. The artist often works with long exposures and an almost closed aperture – as if he was seeking to capture silence itself, and recount new, yet somehow mythical structures and arrangements outside the realm of time.

The exhibited photographs can be purchased at the Buchkunst Gallery in the form of hand-made, limited-edition gelatin silver prints.

For those who would like to see more of Klavdij Sluban’s work, selected excerpts from his ‘Sneg’ (Snow) exhibition, which was shown at the 2022 Les Rencontres de la Photographie in Arles, are featured in the upcoming LFI 1/2023.
