‘On the Mines: David Goldblatt’ was the last exhibition the South-African photographer David Goldblatt conceptualised before he passed away last year. Now the showcase is presented at the Norval Foundation in Cape Town, continuing until 11 August 2019.
David Goldblatt (1930–2018) ranks among the most important chroniclers of life in South Africa. An astute and compassionate observer, the multi-award-winning photographer dedicated more than seventy years to documenting the people, landscapes and structures of his home country – often with a strong focus on the effects of politics and power.

For the showcase On the Mines, the photographer compiled a series of 80 works on the topic of mining in South Africa, and its role as a central driving force in the country’s economy during the 1960s and 1970s. At the same time, On the Mines conveys the pathos of the industry’s decline – showing details such as the grass sprouting alongside a disused steam hoist, or a General Manager’s house before its demolition – seeing as many of the featured mines closed down just years after these images were taken.
