Since then, Team Sky has gone on to win the Tour de France several more times and currently takes its place among the world’s top professional cycling teams. Penman accompanied the team throughout their two-week training camp in January 2017.
“When shooting a cycling sports essay I normally take a bike myself, though on Majorca I travelled in the escort car. I hung my body out the side of the car, putting the Leica SL’s autofocus through its paces. To concentrate entirely on taking pictures, you need a good driver – someone who will also warn you ahead of any branches sticking out into the road.”
On the last day of the training camp, when the athletes had packed up their things, the mechanics had stowed away their equipment and the hotel was gradually emptying out, Penman ran into the team’s trainer and manager. “I saw Sir Dave Brailsford walk out dressed up in his cycling gear. ‘Off for a quick ride?’, I ask. ‘No’, he says, ‘just riding to the airport to catch my flight!”
