The exhibition ‘Human Conditions’ with photographs by Olaf Heine continues at the Camera Work Gallery in Berlin until February 4, 2023.
Through to February 4, 2023, the Camera Work Gallery offers in-depth insights into the multi-faceted oeuvre of Berlin-based photographer Olaf Heine, whose career spans three decades to date. Titled Human Conditions, the showcase – which features over 40 well-known as well as new, previously unpublished works – is the most comprehensive solo exhibition dedicated to the artist’s work so far.

Olaf Heine gained international acclaim for his profound and thoughtfully orchestrated portraits of musicians, actors, writers, visual artists and athletes, as well as his stunning architectural and landscape photographs. Early commissions to shoot album covers for friends – including bands such as Terry Hoax or Fury in the Slaughterhouse – prompted Heine to start studying photography and communication design at Berlin’s renowned Lette-Verein.

His international breakthrough came with his move to Los Angeles in the late 1990s. Since then, Heine has captured portraits of stars such as Nick Cave, Cate Blanchett, Jared Leto, Bret Easton Ellis, Julian Schnabel, John Baldessari, Snoop Dog, Anthony Kiedis, Bono and Jon Bon Jovi, to name but a few. He also established himself as a director of award-winning music videos, short films and commercials. Through his long-term collaborations – amongst others, with German punk-rockers Rammstein and Die Ärzte – Heine’s aesthetic has significantly influenced the visual image of countless bands.

Born in Hanover in 1968, the photographer and film maker got his first assignments even before finishing his training in Berlin, initially with cover photography in the German and international music scene. Later it became above all portraits of sportsmen and women, actors, musicians and other celebrities Heine prefers to photograph in black and white. More
