n-ost-Reportage Prize 2018 for Emile Ducke

On 21 June 2018, the n-ost Reportage Prize was awarded for the twelfth time. 200 guests attended the awards ceremony at the former silent film theatre in Delphi, where the nine nominated East-European reportages – including the three winning series – were introduced in visual, written and auditory form.
The winners of the n-ost Reportage Prize 2018 are:
Benjamin Bidder (category TEXT): Sascha führt ein bisschen Krieg is a text reportage about Alexander Medwedew, a wheelchair-bound young man living in St. Petersburg. The author allows readers to “partake in his protagonist’s hard-won achievements as he fights for a dignified and autonomous life. This goes to show that there are indeed positive stories to come out of Russia,” says jury member Barbara Oertel, head of the foreign department of the German daily newspaper Taz. The reportage was published by Spiegel Online on 5 February 2017.
Christiane Seiler (category RADIO): Honig und Eisen is a radio reportage about life on both sides of the front line in Donbass. “A feature that rattles audiences with its precise yet at the same time atmospheric narrative style,” explains Oxana Evdokimova, author and reporter for the German broadcaster Deutsche Welle, in her appraisal. The feature was broadcast by Deutschlandfunk Kultur on 10 June 2017.
Emile Ducke (category PHOTO): The photo reportage Diagnosis documents a hospital train that runs along a branch line of the Trans-Siberian Railway in order to bring basic medical care to remote Siberian towns – often at temperatures of 38 degrees Celsius and below. “Even under such extreme conditions, the photographer managed to get close to people,” says jury member Michael Pfister, head of photography at Zeit Online. The series was published in the Neue Zürcher Zeitung from 6 to 10 March 2017 under the title Und einmal jährlich kommt der Arzt.
The photographer is currently traveling through Chechnya with a camera from the LFI loan pool.
