Modern-Day Portraits

May 5, 2022

Sibylle Fendt’s exhibition ‘Portraits of Artists’ is on show at Berlin’s f3 – freiraum für fotografie from May 6 to June 19, 2022.
Musician and performance artist Peaches is seated against a backdrop of black dressmaker’s dummies; photographer Katharina Bosse lies in a bathtub, enveloped by red light, reminiscent of a darkroom. Author Hengameh Yaghoobifarah leans back in an armchair, wearing a tight-fitting dress. Dancer Oska Borcherding performs on a flat roof, the skyline of Berlin in the background; actress Bettina Hoppe is pictured standing in her living room.

Berlin-based photographer Sibylle Fendt, who is a member of the renowned Ostkreuz Agency, has been portraying artists, actors, authors, musicians and filmmakers since 2021. The results are now presented at the f3 – freiraum für fotografie in Berlin from May 6 to June 19, 2022.

Working with an analogue medium-format camera, Fendt skilfully transposes the traditional genre of artist portraits into the present day: meticulous orchestrations, double exposures and strong colours characterise her large-format works, which are sometimes simple, other times playful. With both intensity and great sensitivity, the photographer captures artists of different generations and their respective creative worlds.
