Michael Kenna in Brussels

December 20, 2023

With ‘Japon, l’esprit et la lettre’, the Box Gallery dedicates its sixth exhibition to the British photographer’s work.
The showcase, which can be viewed at the Box Gallery until 23 December 2023, is entirely composed of previously unpublished images captured during the artist’s numerous explorations of Japan. More than anywhere else in the world, this is where Michael Kenna finds the ideal landscapes to express his infinite love of essential forms. Time and again, he revisits the same scene – creating variations on recurring themes which, by now, can be considered his own.

To conceptualise the exhibition, the organisers have devised associations between Kenna’s photographs and a selection of calligraphic paintings by Satoru Toma. The presentation is further complemented by utilitarian objects made by four ceramic artists based in Belgium – Jérôme Beurier, Françoise Fanny Cludts, Agnès de Vinck and Pascaline Wollast – whose work is inspired by Japanese traditions and aesthetics.
