In her visual diary ‘Historias fragmentadas’, Peruvian photography artist Claudia Ruiz Gustafson (b. 1973) addresses sentiments of nostalgia, longing and loss following the death of her grandmother. With photo collages using archival family pictures, fragments from journals and childhood objects , Gustafson retraces her own past within an ancestral history that spans generations.
In his series ‘Balancing Cultures’, independent photographer, designer and writer Jerry Takigawa examines his family history and the Japanese American diaspora – giving a voice to the emotions and insights never expressed by his immigrant grandparents and American-born parents. Takigawa, who holds a BFA in painting from the San Francisco State University (1967), studied photography under Don Worth.
In her project ‘Anonymous’, Edie Bresler investigates the relationship between photographer and subject through vintage nude photographs from various sources, all taken between 1843 and 1910. The artist removed each model from her historical background, and embellished the image with embroidery to create ‘descendants’ of the original photograph.
