Lorenzo Tugnoli

July 18, 2025

The multi-award-winning photojournalist has launched a crowdfunding initiative for his publication project, It Can Never Be the Same.
It Can Never Be the Same brings together photographs taken in Afghanistan between 2019 and 2023 – a period of profound change that spans from the peace negotiations between the United States and the Taliban, to the collapse of the Republic and the Taliban’s return to power.

Tugnoli’s images portray a country in a state of upheaval, seen through the lens of an outsider who has spent more than a decade exploring its complexity. The result is more than a traditional reportage – it is a reflection on how photographs influence our perception of a country and its history, and an exploration of the distance between those who tell the story and those who live it.

The Italian-born photojournalist has extensively documented the impact of conflicts in Central Asia and the Middle East. He spent six years living in Afghanistan and eight years in Lebanon, and continues to report from these regions. As well as being a frequent contributor for The Washington Post, he has co-authored The Little Book of Kabul (2014) together with Francesca Recchia. In 2019, Tugnoli received the Pulitzer Prize for Photography; he was also honoured with the Bayeux Calvados Award 2020 and is a three-times World Press Photo Award winner.

In LFI 2.2015, Lorenzo Tugnoli and Francesca Recchia presented their view on Afghanistan, while LFI 2.2018 features a comprehensive portfolio of Tugnoli’s work on Naba’a – one of the most impoverished neighbourhoods of Beirut.
