In Love with Photography

February 6, 2026

From February 5 to March 26, 2026, Hamburg’s Freelens Gallery presents the exhibition Volker Hinz: In Love with Photography.
Over the course of decades, long-time Freelens member and Stern photographer Volker Hinz (1947–2019) captured some of the most significant figures in photography history: Ansel Adams, Richard Avedon, Peter Beard, Alfred Eisenstaedt, F. C. Gundlach and Annie Leibovitz all stood in front of his camera, as did Peter Lindbergh, Lee Miller, Helmut Newton, Mary Ellen Mark, Irving Penn, Sebastião Salgado, Ruth Bernhard and Joel-Peter Witkin, and many others.

The result is an extraordinary collection of intense encounters, both at official events and in the relaxed atmosphere of the artists’ private surroundings. Hinz’s images are more than depictions of famous personalities – they reveal much of the character, attitudes and individuality of the person portrayed. The core focus is always on proximity – and the question of what happens when those who usually stay behind the camera become subjects themselves.

The resulting portraits present immediate – and sometimes surprisingly intimate – perspectives on the people behind the iconic photographs, and paint a vibrant picture of photography as an art form, a craft, and an inner stance. The featured works are taken from the eponymous monograph, In Love with Photography. The exhibition was made possible through the generous support of Volker Hinz’s widow and custodian of his estate, the art historian and writer Henriette Väth-Hinz.
