Leica M for Cinematographers

February 10, 2019

At last night’s ceremony for the 33rd American Society of Cinematographers Awards, Leica announced a new M10-P variant: the Leica M10-P ‘ASC 100 Edition’, especially designed to pay tribute to the world of cinema.
Leica celebrate the 100th anniversary of the American Society of Cinematographers with a truly exceptional new set. The M10-P ‘ASC 100 Edition’ – which comes complete with a Summicron-M 35 f/2 ASPH., Visoflex electronic viewfinder and Leica M-PL lens mount adaptor – has been enhanced with two specially tailored software features, transforming it into a professional tool for filmmakers and cinematographers: the camera now offers a choice between ‘ASC Cine Classic’ mode, simulating a classic analogue 35mm cine film look, and ‘ASC Contemporary’ mode, which delivers the current digital look of contemporary movies. In addition, the aspect ratios typically used in cinematography can be selected from the menu.

The exterior design of the Leica M10-P ‘ASC 100 Edition’ is a modern re-interpretation of Oskar Barnack’s legendary ‘Ur-Leica’ prototype which was, after all, originally intended as a cinematographic aid. The result is a consciously functional look characterised by black engravings on a black chrome finish, combined with a leather trim resembling that of the Leica SL. In the same vein, the golden anodised Leica Summicron included in the set references the brass lens of the historical Ur-Leica, whilst providing an aesthetically striking contrast to the camera.

Founded in 1919, the American Society of Cinematographers is the oldest association for filmmakers worldwide, and unites the best professional cinematographers of our times.

The Leica M10-P ‘ASC 100 Edition’ will be available from autumn 2019.
