Happy Birthday, Lee Friedlander!

Lee Friedlander

July 14, 2024

Best wishes on the occasion of the American Leica photographer's 90th birthday.
His work is unique and his images immediately recognisable: the photographer possesses the incredible ability to produce perfect, dynamic compositions, extracted from the flood of visual information found in modern life, in a matter of seconds. He has long been seen as style-defining within the field of street photography, with his trademark "urban landscapes" and the shots he describes as the "social landscape" of the USA.

Visitors have the opportunity to gain wonderful insight into the photographer's sixty-year career in Arles, where the Lee Friedlander Framed by Joel Coen presentation is running at LUMA Arles on the occasion of this year's Rencontres. The exhibition, which was first shown at the Fraenkel Gallery in San Francisco, reveals the collaboration between the photographer and the renowned filmmaker Joel Coen. The twenty-year younger Coen, has chosen a selection which underlines the visual kinship they share, as they are both equally fascinated by the mysterious power of images. Fragmented frames, deceptive compositions and reflective effects: each of the 70 motifs on display tells an exciting and often unusual little story that leaves the viewer amazed.

We look forward to more, and offer our hearty birthday congratulations!

Born on July 14, 1934 in Aberdeen, Washington, USA. Studied at the Art Center School in Los Angeles (1953–1955) before moving to New York in 1956. This led to connections with photographers such as Walker Evans, Robert Frank, Garry Winogrand and Diane Arbus. An avid jazz fan, he also worked for record labels. From 1960 onwards, he was increasingly able to pursue independent projects, publishing numerous photo books of his thematic series: landscapes, nudes and city and street scenes. His realistic yet highly individual visual language has made him one of the most important photographers of his generation, receiving numerous awards. He lives in New York State.  More
