Artist Talk

Karin & Hans-Dieter Brand

March 10, 2026

On March 12, Karin and Hans-Dieter Brand will be at the Leica Galerie Stuttgart to talk about their documentary project, Dar Esperanza, and the stories behind their powerful images.
Under the title of Dar Esperanza, Karin and Hans-Dieter Brand present a powerful photo reportage about the lives of underage mothers in Cusco, Peru. To realise this project, the couple accompanied young women and their children at the Casa Mantay – a safe house offering accommodation, education and prospects for victims of violence and abuse.

The photographs are the result of intense encounters with the shelter’s inhabitants. In the course of in-depth conversations, Karin Brand built relationships with the young women based on mutual trust, while Hans-Dieter Brand documented their everyday lives with his camera. Their collaborative efforts gave rise to a series of sensitive portraits that offer insight into the difficult circumstances of the protagonists, but also convey their hopes and new-found opportunities for the future.

During an artist talk, held at the Leica Galerie Stuttgart on March 12 from 6:30 p.m, the duo will talk about the project’s development and their personal experiences in Peru, accompanied by a presentation of selected images from the series.

Photography has been their joint hobby for several years now – Karin mostly beside the camera, Hans-Dieter behind the lens, as he has been for 50 years already. The thing they share in common is a sincere interest in their fellow human beings. For this reason their work focuses on portrait photography. The process usually unfolds with Karin having intensive conversations with the protagonists, while Hans-Dieter takes their portraits. This often results in very intimate images – much like in their current project from Cusco; but also, for example, as in the case of an artist portrait they produced with Spanish conductor Marc Migó.  More
