Jürgen Schadeberg received the Leica Hall of Fame Award for his life's work on 15 November 2018 in Wetzlar. The German-born photographer is considered one of the most important image journalists in South Africa.
Whether the photo of the singing Miriam Makeba or the image of Nelson Mandela, who looks through the bars of his former prison cell: Jürgen Schadeberg has photographed in South Africa many now iconic icons.
As a photojournalist and representative of life photography, he is in the best sense a humanist. He has always met the people portrayed by him with sympathy and respect, regardless of nationality or skin color.
Born in Berlin in 1931, the photographer moved to South Africa in 1950. Not least through his work for the magazine Drum, he became the chronicler of an epoch. In 1964 Schadeberg had to leave South Africa and worked as a freelancer in Europe and the USA in the following decades. Here, too, he remains true to his empathic way of working. Only in 1985 he returns to Johannesburg; until 2007 he will create the second South African chapter of his photographic work.
Leica honors the photographer for this lifetime of over seven decades with the Leica Hall of Fame Award and shows an extensive selection of his photographs in the Leica Gallery Wetzlar until February 2019.
On November 17, there will also be a book signing with Jürgen Schadeberg at the Leica Galerie Frankfurt for a presentation there.

Jürgen Schadeberg was born in Berlin in 1931. From 1946 onwards he studied at the College for Optics and Photography in Berlin, before becoming a photographer with the German Press Agency (dpa) in Hamburg. In 1950 Schadeberg relocated to South Africa, where he joined the staff at Drum Magazine, the most important forum for South Africa’s black majority population. From 1964 onwards he worked in Europe and the US, as well as lecturing at various universities. 1985 marked his return to South Africa, where he was based until 2007. Today Jürgen Schadeberg lives in Spain together with his wife. More
