Iren Stehli – So close, yet so far

Iren Stehli (1953) is renowned for her photographic essays created in the Czech Republic. For several decades, she accompanied Libuna, a Roma living in Prague, through the vicissitudes of her life – creating a unique long-term study during which the photographer turned from outside observer to friend.

The series, simply entitled Libuna, illustrates the many facets of Iren Stehli's visual language. Although veering towards reportage photography, her style goes far beyond a factual documentary of an external situation. Instead, the emphasis is always drawn back to capturing an internal reality and creating an empathic portrait.

Alongside this extraordinary long-term project, the exhibition also includes a number of the artist's lesser-known works. The collection offers a profound insight into the Czech Republic's social climate during the Socialist era and the years of the Velvet Revolution after 1989.
