Born 1950 in New York, Roger Ballen has lived in South Africa since the 1970s. In his extraordinary oeuvre, which spans more than four decades to date, the Leica photographer explores the twists and turns of his subconscious mind, with dramatic orchestrations that address themes such as marginality, alienation and the relationship between humans and the animal world. The results are ambiguous, often visceral black-and-white images that have garnered both controversy and admiration.
‘Enigma’ is on view at the Parisian gallery until November 18, 2023.
