Multi-award-winning Magnum photographer Alec Soth (born 1969) is a celebrated chronicler of American life, renowned for his poetic documentaries on marginalised areas of the USA. The artist, who frequently works with Leica cameras, first gained acclaim with his series ‘Sleeping by the Mississippi’ (2004).
FOAM Amsterdam now presents the first museum exhibition of Soth’s latest project, ‘I Know How Furiously Your Heart Is Beating’. The title was taken from the Wallace Stevens poem, ‘The Gray Room’ (1917), which describes ordinary surroundings whilst alluding to the protagonist’s emotionally intense, internal world. The series started with a portrait Soth took in 2017, capturing the then 97-year-old choreographer Anna Halprin in her home in California. In contrast to many of his previous visual narrations, the shooting location was not premeditated, but arose from a series of chance encounters.
