The Traismauer Fine Art Gallery in Austria marks the 60th anniversary of the Hungarian Uprising with an exhibition of works by Magnum photographer Erich Lessing. Lessing was born in Vienna in 1923. In 1939 he fled to Palestine to escape the Nazi regime.
After studying radio technology in Haifa, he worked as a taxi driver and carp breeder before discovering photography. He joined the British army as a photographer, later returning to Austria in 1947 to work for the Associated Press. In 1951, David ‘Chim’ Seymour invited him to join Magnum Photos, with Lessing becoming a full member in 1955.
Lessing documented the events in post-war Europe for the agency, as well as the Hungarian Uprising in 1956. His reportage on the revolution earned him the American Art Directors Award.
The opening reception takes place on 7 October 2016 at 19.00. For further information visit www.fineartgalerie.at.
