For his two latest series, Frédéric Stucin used a special technique to conjure up atmospheres filled with mystique: working at dusk, just before nightfall, he illuminated outdoor scenes with carefully positioned light sources to echo the aesthetics of a movie set. All images were captured with the Leica S.
In his series ‘La Source’, the photographer takes the viewer on an upstream journey along the Seine – turning the river into a symbolic, unreal place shrouded in mystery. Instead of mapping out locations, the images convey the abstract power of the Seine, and open up an imaginary world populated by enigmatic figures.
With ‘Le Décor’, Stucin takes us into the heart of Paris. Using the same aesthetic approach, the photographer captured the city’s deserted streets during the 2020 lockdown. The images show Paris devoid of life, akin to “an enormous stage, or the scenery of an empty film set.”
Stucin’s photographs are juxtaposed with works by contemporary artist Enzo Mianes, represented by Galerie Mor Charpentier. Mianes’ sculptures are made of objects found in the Seine: during walks downstream from Paris, the artist collected these small, sunken treasures and intimate fragments of people’s lives.
