‘Un’invincible Estate / An Invincible Summer’ is the theme of this year’s edition of the Fotografia Europea photo festival. The title, which refers to a poem by French writer Albert Camus, expresses how inner strength can sustain us in times of adversity – and that even in the dead of winter, the renewal of life is, ultimately, destined to prevail.
In view of the global events of the past two years, the title also serves as a metaphor for a re-awakening of artistic collectivity in post-pandemic times.
The festival revolves around individual, deeply personal stories that are contemplative in nature, and convey new perspectives of the world. In her series ‘Isola’, for example, Simona Ghizzoni – winner of this year’s Open Call – explores her relationship with nature after trading city life in Rome for the rural Tuscan-Emilian Apennines during the pandemic. Czech photography artist Jitka Hanzlovà documents young people’s resilience in the face of the challenges and social impact of the Covid-19 measures.
The historical part of the festival programme is dedicated to American documentary photographer Mary Ellen Mark (1940 – 2015) and the Italian artist and photographer Luigi Ghirri (1943 – 1992), who grew up in the Reggio Emilia region.
