With the support of leading foundations, the Folkwang Museum in Essen has been able to secure the project ‘Folkwang Raum’ by Wolfgang Tillmans.
The Folkwang Museum in Essen has been able to add a significant acquisition to its Photographic Collection. This was made possible by the support of the NRW Art Foundation, the Krupp Jubilee Foundation, the Photographic Collection’s Support Association and the Sparkasse Essen.

Wolfgang Tillmans counts among the most important artists working in the field of photography today. From 1985 to 2014, he designed the Folkwang Raum (‘Folkwang Space’) specifically for the Folkwang Museum in the form of 15 original works. The project was intended to reflect the museum’s outstanding collection of experimental and artistic photography. For Tillmans, it also represents a cross-sectional overview of his work: “Time and again, [Folkwang Raum] revolves around the question of what is recordable and, therefore, what is visible.”

The Folkwang Museum’s collection encompasses a first-class selection of experimental photography. Leading works from the 1920s and 1930s include an extensive display of works by Hungarian constructivist László Moholy-Nagy. The collection further features examples of the Subjective Photography practiced by Otto Steinert and his contemporaries in the 1950s, as well as media-reflective and critical works from the 1980s. With this recent acquisition, the Photographic Collection has now closed an important gap.
