The focus is on the revolutionary change that came about as a result of a technological innovation – the handy, ‘original Leica’. For the first time ever, the exhibition attempts to make a comprehensive presentation of the transformation that the invention and introduction of the Leica brought about for photography. Rather than focussing on the story of the camera itself, the exhibition takes a look at the visual revolution that resulted from this technical innovation.
The touring exhibition in the Spanish capital presents around 400 pieces, including pictures by renowned Leica photographers such as René Burri, Thomas Hoepker, Bruce Gilden, Christer Strömholm, Bruce Davidson, F.C. Gundlach, Fred Herzog, William Eggleston, and many more.
As a homage to Spanish Leica photography, the display will also include works by Ramón Masats, Leopoldo Pomés, Ricard Terré, Juan Colom and Alberto García-Alix, as well as Robert Capa’s famous Falling Soldier, taken during the Spanish Civil War. Within the framework of the exhibition, the pictures will be accompanied by documentary material such as books, newspapers, camera models and films.
The ‘Eyes Wide Open! 100 Years of Leica Photography’ exhibition at the Espacio Fundación Telefónica will run from May 11 to September 10, 2017, open Tuesdays to Sundays from 10am to 8pm. Entrance is free.
