Erich Lessing in Vienna

May 25, 2015

Erich Lessing's famous series "Kinder" (Children) is showing at the Cimmic Photography Gallery in Vienna until 26 June 2015.
"In order to take a good picture, you need two eyes," Erich Lessing once said. "And those eyes either have a gift for seeing, or they don't." His eyes were indeed gifted. The acclaimed Austrian photographer became a member of the Magnum Agency in 1951. Throughout his career, he created tens of thousands of images. Through countless exhibitions and more than 60 book publications, his work reached audiences around the whole world.

Touching images – not just for parents
The Cimmic Photography Gallery in Vienna now presents Lessing's famous series "Kinder" (Children), with photographs taken in Vienna and Eastern Europe in the 1950s and 1960s.

Sometimes humorous, they depict the beautiful as well as the bitter aspects of that time. Despite having faced many tragedies, the children he captured find fun in simple everyday activities – perhaps showing a greater capacity to embrace life than the adults around them.
