Elina Brotherus – A Retrospective

June 23, 2016

The Pavillon Populaire in Montpellier presents an extensive retrospective by Elina Brotherus, showing from 29 June to 25 September 2016.
From 29 June to 25 September 2016, a retrospective by Elina Brotherus will be showing at the Pavillon Populaire in Montpellier, Southern France. With more than 160 photographs displayed over two floors, the exhibition spans the entirety of the artist’s oeuvre – from her visual narratives (Suite Française, 1999) to strictly formal works (The New Painting, 2000–2004) as well as her most recent, intensely autobiographical projects (Carpe Fucking Diem, 2011–2013).

Born 1972 in Helsinki, Brotherus now lives in Finland and France. Her approach is centred on deeply personal self-portraits reflecting her current life circumstances, as well as landscape photographs in which Brotherus references art-historical masterpieces by painters rangeing from Poussin to Caspar David Friedrich.
