Elephants in Heaven

An exhibition of works by Joachim Schmeisser continues at the Immagis Gallery in Munich until 27 January 2018. Elephants in Heaven takes the viewer on a moving journey to the David Sheldrick Wildlife Trust in Kenya, where the photographer captured orphaned baby elephant, their caretakers and the daily battle against poachers. The show encompasses around 25 images, some of them displayed as large-format and platinum palladium prints.

In our everyday language, Elephants are often synonymous with being ‘thick-skinned’ – perpetuating the misconception that they are in some way invulnerable. Nothing could be further from the truth. For too long, elephants have been hunted and killed for the sake of their ivory tusks. What is often forgotten is that many of the slayed animals leave behind their scared and traumatised young, who have to continue their lives as orphans. Photographer Joachim Schmeisser tells their story in fascinating and beautifully sensitive images.

A book of the same title has been published by teNeues, featuring a foreword by Dr. Matthias Harder.
