Established in 1982, the grant is among the most renowned honours for contemporary photography in Germany. From a pool of almost 200 submissions, the international jury selected Jan Paul Evers’ proposal for the project After the Lighting: Post-apocalyptic Photographs for the Arc as Archive, as well as the ambition of Sebastian Stumpf to create a performative photographic series on the social environment in the USA. Evers and Stumpf will each receive 10,000 euros in order to realise these projects.
Jan Paul Evers (born 1982 in Cologne) lives and works in Cologne and Braunschweig. His artistic work centres on the field of experimental abstract photography. He filters and extracts fragments of the visible reality, records them in the form of digital data and subsequently translates them into analogue photographic material.
Sebastian Stumpf (born 1980 in Würzburg) lives and works in Leipzig and Berlin. His work is focused on the urban landscape and the interior spaces of museums – exploring their dimensions in relation to his own physical form. The resulting photographs and videos represent both an examination of how we have established ourselves in these spaces, as well as effortlessly executed comedy scenarios.
