City of Dreams

September 9, 2024

Through to 19 September 2024, the CAMERA WORK Virtual Gallery presents the exhibition A City of Dreams – 400 Years of New York.
The showcase features 40 works by outstanding photographers whose artistic development has been profoundly linked to the American metropolis. Many of them have lived in New York, or are still based there today. The represented artists include Thomas Billhardt, Michel Comte, Elliott Erwitt, Thomas Hoepker, David LaChapelle, Steve Schapiro, Martin Schoeller, Albert Watson, Dean West and David Yarrow, a.o.

The exhibition was curated by CAMERA WORK to coincide with the 400th founding anniversary of New York City. To this day, the ‘Big Apple’ counts among the most high-ranking cities in the world. It has been a cultural hub since the early twentieth century, and plays a key role on the international art market – with a rich history as an epicentre for countless artists, aesthetic movements and creative styles. Particularly since the mid-twentieth century, New York has evolved into a global capital of modern and contemporary art. At the same time, the city itself – distinguished by its unmistakable character and unique architecture – has become an important subject for photographers, and a platform for exciting visual orchestrations.
