The exhibition "Im Augenblick. Photographs by Fred Stein" opens at the Jewish Museum Berlin on November 22, 2013
His pictures are familiar, but his name hardly at all: Fred Stein. From November 22, 2013, to March 23, 2014, the Jewish Museum Berlin is showing for the first time a comprehensive retrospective of the photographer.

Born in 1909 in Dresden, the son of a Rabbi, Stein studied law there before emigrating to Paris in 1933 and to New York in 1941. In exile, he was confronted with the challenge of building himself an existence out of nothing. A Leica that he and Lilo Stein gave themselves as a wedding present, provided him with the decisive tool to make photography his new profession.

A Master of Portraiture
With his Leica, Stein captured life on the streets. A master of portraiture, he also photographed some of the great personalities of the 20th century, including Albert Einstein, Thomas Mann, Hannah Arendt, Salvador Dalí and Hermann Hesse. Fred Stein left behind a great body of work, of which 150 black and white photographs can now be seen in Germany for the first time.
