For the past ten years, Roman Pawlowski has photographed for publications such as GEO, ZEIT Magazine, SZ Magazine, Der Spiegel, and Stern – capturing portraits and reportages both in Germany and abroad. With the exhibition ‘Menschen Zwischenwelten’ (People Between Worlds), the Galerie für Fotografie shines a light on the Hanover-based photographer’s portrait work and selected landscape shots, presented mostly in the form of excerpts and fragments.
Removed from their original context, the exhibits are reassembled into a new, cohesive whole: portraits captured in the course of assignments are combined with independent projects – creating an atmosphere that reflects Pawlowski’s view of photography as a personal experience, far from external factors. While many well-known portraitists adhere to a recognisable style, Pawlowski prefers to pursue ever-new approaches – engaging fully with each protagonist, and capturing them in individual, associatively chosen settings.
