Berlin – Buenos Aires

The showcase Annemarie Heinrich. Photographs Between Germany and Argentina 1933–1987 is on view at the Willy-Brandt-Haus in Berlin until 29 September 2024.
To mark the 30th anniversary of the twin-city relationship between Buenos Aires and Berlin, the Willy-Brandt-Haus cultural centre presents a major exhibition of works by German-Argentinian photographer Annemarie Heinrich (1912 – 2005). This is the first time her life’s work is the subject of a comprehensive solo exhibition in her original home country.

The display of more than 120 photographs – including several vintage prints – spans from famous portraits of Argentina’s art and entertainment scene, to classic, abstract and symbol-laden renditions; from nudes and self portraits to series on Buenos Aires, the world of ballet, and women at work.

Born in Darmstadt, Germany, in 1912, Annemarie Heinrich grew up in Berlin’s Lichtenberg district until the age of 14. In 1926, her family decided to leave Germany for economic and political reasons, emigrating to relatives in Argentina. Heinrich opened a small photo studio in Buenos Aires when she was just 19. She later specialised in portrait photography, capturing many of the great stars of her time. For forty years, her images graced the covers of popular entertainment magazines. Yet she also pursued more experimental approaches, particularly in the course of her travels, and was among the early proponents of photography as a form of art. Heinrich’s work has been featured in numerous exhibitions, both in Argentina and around the world.
