Barbara Klemm

October 2, 2024

Through to 19 October 2024, the Peter Sillem Gallery in Frankfurt presents an exhibition of works by Barbara Klemm – revealing the photojournalist’s masterful eye for landscape compositions.
In this exhibition, the Peter Sillem Gallery brings together around 30 of Barbara Klemm’s landscape portraits, captured in locations around the globe – from Germany’s Allgovia region and Great Plön Lake, all the way to the Mongolian steppes and the Iguazu Falls. The gelatin silver prints, which have been hand-developed by the artist, are distinguished by masterful compositions that sculpt landscapes and light into unforgettable images.

Barbara Klemm ranks among the most important representatives of contemporary German photography. Born 1939 in Münster and raised in the city of Karlsruhe, she started her career at the Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung in 1959. From 1970 onwards, she served as the publication’s editorial photographer, specialising in politics and culture.

Her work has been recognised with numerous awards – among them the Dr. Erich Salomon Award of the German Photographic Society (1989), the Hugo Erfurth Prize of the City of Leverkusen (1989), the Maria Sibylla Merian Prize (1998), the Hessian Cultural Prize (2000), and the Max Beckmann Prize of the City of Frankfurt (2009). She was also the first female photographer to be honoured with the Leica Hall of Fame Award (2012).

Since 1992, Barbara Klemm has been a member of the Berlin Academy of Arts, and in 2010, she was elected into the Pour le Mérite order. The photographer lives in Frankfurt am Main, Germany.
