Verdiana Albano is the recipient of this year’s HfG Fotoförderpreis, sponsored by the Deutsche Börse Photography Foundation. The photography student was chosen for her project ‘Surrounded’.

Since 2010, the 2,500-euro HfG Fotoförderpreis has been awarded to a student of the Offenbach University of Art and Design (HfG). The traditional end-of-year presentation and subsequent award ceremony had to be cancelled due to the pandemic. As an alternative, a number of students created a newspaper to showcase their work. This served as the basis for the selection process of this year’s jury, comprised of the acclaimed German press photographer Barbara Klemm, and Anne-Marie Beckmann, Director of the Deutsche Börse Photography Foundation.

“Verdiana Albano’s series, ‘Surrounded’, is dedicated to the megacity of Chongqing, whose extremely rapid expansion over the past forty years has culminated in a population of over 30 million,” the jury statement reads. “Rather than presenting Chongqing as a high-tech utopia, Albano managed to capture the last vestiges of non-conformism within the city. Using an almost monochrome colour scheme, she paints an atmospheric picture that is probably more in line with reality than the customary visions of modern China.”
