Thomas Kern, co-founder of the Swiss photography agency Lookat Photos, became known in the 1990s for his reportages on the effects of conflict and war, working in locations such as Northern Ireland and former Yugoslavia. He initially visited Haiti in 1997, commissioned by the culture magazine duzum. This first encounter took place shortly before Kern’s move to San Francisco, where he spent the next eight years as a freelance photographer.
Immediately captivated by the Caribbean island, he returned time and again to record the turbulent development of the former ‘Pearl of the Antilles’. Reserved yet intimate, his images capture everyday life in one of the world’s poorest countries in classic black and white images. His photographs show the individual efforts and simple joys within a nation beset by natural catastrophes, political instability and ecological disaster, while also touching on the history of slavery and the attempt to escape into the spiritual world of Voodoo.
