75 years of LFI: a glimpse into the future (3)

Can photography be a catalyst for solidarity in difficult times? The young photographer looks hopefully into the future.
“I have an exciting time ahead of me. Following my graduation from the Ostkreuz Schule für Fotografie in May, 2024, I'm looking forward to every coming my way.

My Something Was Missing Within project is going to be published by Witty Books, and will appear as a photo book in July next year. The work deals with traditional male stereotypes and the social pressure they have to comply with. I'm personally concerned most of all by the absence of sensitivity and vulnerability in masculine role models.

I find there is a paradox: in a traditional, patriarchal society, men establish the values and rules that damage, not only others, but they themselves as well. With this in mind, I went all over Europe photographing different subcultures, events and people, who externalise different aspects of masculinity. The project doesn't aim to emphasise one suffering over another, but rather, Something was Missing Within was created as a form of expression of the fact that men also suffer under patriarchal structures.

I hope that people's own concerns will lead to interest in this project and that this interest will, in turn, lead to reflection and change. For the future, I hope to deepen the artistic imagery that I have developed with the project. I want to go in new directions and continue working together with inspiring people.

Above all, however, I hope that in the times that are ahead of us, we will support and deal with each other in solidarity. Photography can also contribute to that.”

Born in 1999, the photographer belongs to a generation whose future is uncertain in view of climate change, the shift to the right, and increasing global tensions. Inspired by how these subjects influence societal processes, he visualises an emotional world through an artistic-documentary approach in his photography. Kreyenberg lives and works in Berlin, and completed his studies at the Ostkreuz Schule für Fotografie in May, 2024.  More
