Anniversaries

As part of their 'Talents' exhibition series, the C|O Berlin currently presents 'Anniversaries' with photographs by Marc Beckmann, along with the accompanying publication by Sarah Alberti.

Since 2004, photographer Marc Beckmann (*1978) has been observing military parades, acts of state, remembrances and demonstrations on specific national days in countries around the world. However, instead of focusing on the official act itself, he portrays incidental situations on the periphery of each event.

By avoiding the usual pictures of politicians, podiums, wreaths, official participants and audiences, Beckmann steers clear of familiar stereotypes. His work reflects the continuous endeavour of photojournalists and artists to find new visual strategies at a time when neutral and independent reporting is becoming an increasingly unsurmountable challenge.
