Documentary photographer Hannes Jung, born in 1986, has received the 2017 n-ost Reportage Prize in the photography category, for his How is Life? photo reportage from Lithuania. The award ceremony took place on June 29 in the Grüner Salon of the Berlin Volksbühne.

Lithuania is the country with the highest suicide rate in Europe. With his pictures, Jung researches the reasons and consequences of this sad phenomenon. The How is life? reportage first appeared on 22.12.2016 in the online magazine for young photojournalists, emerge.

With the n-ost Reportage Prize, the Netzwerk für Osteuropa-Berichterstattung (Network for East European Reporting) has been honouring outstanding stories – in both content and form – from countries in middle, east and southern Europe, for the past eleven years. The pieces have to have appeared in the German-speaking media during the previous year. The award aims to encourage quality reporting, recognise particularly good authors, and keep up a dialogue on what “East Europe” is actually about and how it is reported on. The n-ost Reportage Prize is awarded in each of the following categories: text, radio and photo, and comes with €2,000 in prize money for each.
