60th Biennale Arte in Venice

April 15, 2024

Following a three-day pre-opening, the Venice Biennale International Art Exhibition opens its doors to the public on Saturday, 20 April 2024.
Artists, curators, collectors and art enthusiasts from every corner of the globe will once again flock to Italy’s lagoon city for a unique celebration of creativity and cultural exchange. Along with the Documenta in Kassel, the Venice Biennale ranks among the largest and most important presentations of contemporary art worldwide.

The theme of this year’s 60th anniversary edition is Stranieri Ovunque – Foreigners Everywhere. The title draws on an ongoing project conceived in 2004 by the Parisian Claire Fontaine collective. It comprises a series of neon signs, each of which spells ‘Foreigners Everywhere’ in a different language. The phrase, in turn, was derived from the name of an anarchist collective based in Turin that stood up against racism in the early 2000s.

Foreigners Everywhere is a theme that is more topical than ever, as the festival’s curator, Adriano Pedrosa, emphasises: “First of all, wherever you go and wherever you are you will always encounter foreigners – they/we are everywhere. Secondly, no matter where you find yourself, you are always truly, and deep down inside, a foreigner.“

The vast presentation, featuring works by over 330 international artists, will be displayed in the pavilions of the Giardini della Biennale, in the iconic Arsenale building, and in several other locations throughout the city until 24th November 2024.
