Reporters without Borders (RSF) just presented the worldwide round-up of journalists killed, detained or held hostage in 2019.
As the year draws to an end, Reporters without Borders (RSF) releases its annual assessment of press freedom around the world. 389 journalists and other media professionals are currently in prison in connection with their work, marking a 12 percent increase from last year. Almost half of them are detained in just three countries: China, Egypt and Saudi Arabia.
49 media professionals have been killed since the beginning of 2019, many of them in countries that are officially at peace. The majority of fatalities took place in Syria, Mexico, Afghanistan, Pakistan and Somalia. The report also states that at least 57 media professionals are currently being held hostage.
“Significantly fewer media workers died in armed conflicts than in previous years,” RSF board spokesman Michael Rediske explains. “However, a country at peace such as Mexico is currently just as dangerous for journalists as war-torn Syria.”
