Gilden became famous thanks to his studies of people on Coney Island, in New York, on Haiti and in the Japanese underworld. All his photographic series, most of which are portraits, are defined by his use of flash and an immediate proximity to his subjects. Gilden's pictures spotlight the people portrayed, removing them from their situational context. His choice of protagonists also reveals his confident knack for finding characters whose lives have left traces on their faces – faces that tell a story.
In addition to vintage prints from the Coney Island series taken in the sixties, and Facing New York from the eighties, the exhibition mostly presents new, large-format pieces taken in recent years in various places around the USA, as part of the Magnum Postcards from America group project.
Gilden used a Leica S System camera to photograph the pictures taken for this project.
