The exhibition ‘Septembre au Chili 1971/1973’ is on view at the Galerie Le Château d'Eau in Toulouse from September 11, 2023 to January 7, 2024.
To mark the 50th anniversary of the coup d'état against Chile’s socialist government on September 11, 1973, the Galerie Le Château d'Eau in Toulouse presents a showcase of works by French photographer Raymond Depardon and American photographer David Burnett, illustrating their perspectives on the country at that time.

In 1971, Depardon visited Chile for the first anniversary of President Salvador Allende’s election. He was accompanied by his friend, Raymond Depardon, the editorial secretary of Zoom Magazine. Two years later, American photographer David Burnett reported on the coup d'état led by General Pinochet, who subsequently plunged the country into a violent military dictatorship.

Burnett chronicled key events of Pinochet’s early days in power, from the storming of the presidential palace to the funeral of Pablo Neruda. Combined with Depardon’s photographs, they became a collective reportage that won the Robert Capa Gold Medal in New York – the highest distinction in photojournalism.
