Last Call: Carmignac Photojournalism Award

October 16, 2023

Submissions for the 14th Carmignac Photojournalism Award close on October 17, 2023 at 11:59 PM (GMT).
Entries for the 14th Carmignac Photojournalism Award – which this year is dedicated to the lives of women and girls in Afghanistan – are accepted until October 17 at 11:59 PM (GMT).

Since seizing Kabul in August 2021, the Taliban regime has continuously grown stronger, and is now rigorously enforcing Sharia law to silence women, girls and LGBTQIA+ minorities. Deprived of their fundamental rights, they are subjected to systematic discrimination: they are banned from post-primary-school education, excluded from political and public life, and are not allowed to work, move freely or even choose the clothes they wear. Arrests, torture, death threats and imprisonment have surged.

The brutal discrimination perpetrated by the Taliban has been widely documented since the late 1990s. It is in clear violation of international human rights agreements, which Afghanistan has previously signed.

The 14th edition of the Carmingac Photojournalism Award seeks to support a project that highlights the circumstances of women and girls in Afghanistan in the form of images and writing. In November 2023, the jury will come together to determine this year’s laureate. The allocated timeframe for the project is January to June 2024 – the final reportage will be presented both as a monograph and an exhibition at the end of 2024.
