Visual poetry between light and shadow

September 19, 2023

Our latest community contribution focuses on the visual interplay between light and shadow.
The one is impossible without the other: photography is an endless dance between shadow and light. All too frequently, these two opposites are set in relation to each other in order to create narrative depth and arouse very specific emotions. Also, at a technical level, a targeted use of light and shadow can offer numerous advantages: shadow, for example, can serve to hide unwanted elements in a picture and draw the viewer’s eyes specifically towards the main motif; light, on the other hand, can bring out details and add texture to the image.

LFI.Gallery users also experiment regularly with different light sources, settings and angles, take pictures at every possible time of day or night, and making use of the most diverse range of weather conditions in doing so. With this context in mind, our editorial team has selected some of the most exciting pictures that illustrate this interplay of light and shadow in photography. The hand-picked collection is designed to reveal the ways in which photographers around the world capture their surroundings from unique angles, telling a variety of stories and creating moods through the targeted use of shadow and light. Have fun as you scroll through them!
