Apple Leica auctioned

November 25, 2013

A digital Leica rangefinder camera designed by Jony Ive and Marc Newson was sold at auction yesterday for over 1.8 million dollars
A one-of-a-kind, digital rangefinder Leica M, developed by Apple head designer Jony Ive and designer Marc Newson, was sold at the (RED) auction at Sotheby’s in New York for 1,805,000 US dollars.

The 44 exclusive items that were auctioned included a Star Wars helmet signed by George Lucas (245,000 US dollars), a Soviet astronaut's spacesuit (305,000 US dollars), and a one-of-a-kind designer version of the Mac Pro (977,000 US dollars).

The proceeds from the Jony & Marc & Bono (RED) auction amounted to a total of 12,883,000 US dollars, which will go to the Global Fund to fight AIDS, tuberculosis and malaria.

This fundraising auction serves an important purpose: to give birth to the first AIDS-free generation in thirty years. Every day over 900 children are still born carrying the virus, a figure that can be reduced to virtually zero by 2015.
